The flight of Apollo 1 was to have been the shakedown flight of the Saturn 1B and Apollo spacecraft, the first flight with man on board. Its goal was to demonstrate performance and operability of the CSM.

The first scheduled launch of the Apollo spacecraft was to occur on February 21, 1967.

That day never came for Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee.

But out of the ashes of that horrible tragedy was born a new spacecraft, stronger and more secure, for future crews who eventually achieved America's goals of landing and exploration on the moon.
